Call for papers, 2/1//09

At the recent NEW VIEWS 2 conference at the London College of
Communication in July of 2008 there was some heated discussion in the
Interdisciplinarity Discussion Group. See conference site for more
details: http://newviews.co.uk/speakers.html) One visitor dropped in
for a visit after the group had met for several session and attempted
to provoke the group (his admitted intention) with the declaration
that Design is Dead. See Rick Poyner's article on the conference
(http://www.eyemagazine.com/opinion.php?id=160&oid=453). We don't
accept that Graphic Design is dead (as one presenter suggested) but
that certain views have reached their life span. The view of the
designer or designers' role as either the maker of an end product, or
on the other extreme as the “expert†who comes into a project with
“the answer†is one that many of us felt was no longer operative.

Interdisciplinarity is a given in design activity. What we can all
benefit from is a closer examination of the methods, theories,
difficulties and possibilities to form a stronger framework for how to
be part of the shift that re-visions the role of the graphic designer
in the current and next generation. We are looking to collect
submissions from both designers and those who have or wish to bring a
designer into their process for a special issue of MULTI
(http://multi.cias.rit.edu/).
We welcome traditional papers and non-traditional submissions looking at:
-theoretical, applied, and/or pedagogical practice
-the use of the term graphic design:do we abandon this term as some
suggested?
-evaluation/effectiveness of interdisciplinarity in the classroom (how
do we evaluate? what are the problems?)
-how does design bring together and integrate the views of science?
psychology? economy? ecology? politics? etc…
-what are the factors of change? (i.e. social change such as feminist
theory, technology…etc.)

Design isn’t dead, but it is at the crossroad of a new direction.
Let’s explore the possibilities together as designers, educators,
students and collaborators.

Artist book reading: 2/1/09

Dates and Deadlines:
– All submissions must be made electronically to artistbookreading@gmail.com by February 1, 2009
– Artists will be notified by e-mail of the jury’s decisions by March 1, 2009.
– The reading will take place at the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection in Chicago on March 28, 2009 from 10 am to 3pm.

Jury:
The jury will be made up of Chicago artists. They will be looking for unique, well-crafted book works as well as good solutions to presenting these works which will best communicate their content and uniqueness.

What to send
For each submission include:
1) A Word or PDF document including in this order:
– your name
– your e-mail
– your phone number
– an artists’ statement specifically about this work and it’s content
– a detailed description of your proposed reading presentation including any special technical or other needs (projectors, audio equipment, lighting ...)

2) A Word or PDF document of the text that you will read:
– Each reader will have 6-10 minutes to read/present. Please be sure that your presentation fits into this time frame.
– If you are proposing to read a portion of a larger work, include all or enough of the larger work, with the section that you plan to read highlighted, so that the jury can better understand the entire work and your presentation.

3) Images of the bookwork:
– Images should be jpeg, 5”x7”, 150dpi.
– Include up to 5 images of the bookwork clearly showing the content, structure, and how they are related to and will be a part of your proposed presentation of the work for this reading.

4) Send all submissions to artistbookreading@gmail.com by the February 1, 2009 deadline. We will e-mail you to confirm receipt your submission.

Photo+Book: A Juried Exhibition of Self-Published On-Demand Photography Books
March 6-28, 2008

WHAT IS PHOTO+BOOK? - Photographers have been witness to a dizzying
array of groundbreaking innovations in recent years. One of those
exciting innovations is the emergence of "self-published, on demand"
book printing services. You know.... Blurb, Lulu, iPhoto, MyPublisher
and all those other proliferating providers as well. These books allow
photographers to present their photographs in a high-quality, low-cost
and professional-looking book. With the excellent quality of on-demand
printers in the marketplace today, you can publish one copy just for
you or publish lots of copies and market them under your own imprint.
They also make great book dummies to show to the real publishers.

ELIGIBILITY - Photo+Book is open to photographers both in the United
States and abroad who have made a photography book via any on-demand
printing service. Entrants may submit up to three different titles of
any size, format, or style. Hard cover, soft cover, case-wraps,
landscape, portrait, square, color, black and white. There is a $25
entry fee and entries are due at the gallery by January 24, 2008.

JUROR - This exhibition will be juried by Christopher Rauschenberg—a
photographer who has had 83 solo shows in six countries over the last
35 years. His most recent book, Paris Changing: Revisiting Eugene
Atget's Paris, was published by Princeton Architectural Press in 2007.
His work is in hundreds of museums, private and corporate collections
and he is the co-founder of Blue Sky Gallery and Photolucida. Learn

BEST OF SHOW AWARDS - Four artists submitting books will be selected
for Best of Show Awards. Those four photographers will exhibit four

MCBA Prize, March 6, 2009

It is my pleasure to announce the establishment of a new book art award, The MCBA Prize. This new international honor awarded by Minnesota Center for Book Arts is the first of its kind to recognize book art from across the field and celebrate the diversity of this vital discipline. All artists who use the book format as their primary means of expression are encouraged to apply. A distinguished panel of jurors, themselves leaders in the field, will consider all eligible work, from hand-printed fine press books, to inexpensive pamphlets, to one-of-a-kind sculptural works. In total, over $8,000 will be awarded to four finalists and one winner. Entries must be received by March 6, 2009. The winner will be announced at a gala celebration on July 25, 2009.

The award of The MCBA Prize is an important component of MCBA¹s 2009 Book Art Biennial, a combination of presentations, peer discussion sessions and hands-on workshops exploring the efficacy of artists¹ books as agents of social change and activism. Registration materials for the Biennial will be available January 1, 2009.

I am very excited to present this new award and ask for your help in spreading news of the opportunity to book artists around the globe. Art, Fact, and Artifact: The Book in Time and Place,
hosted by The University of Iowa Center for the Book,
January 8 – 10, 2009.

ENTRIES

Entries must be received by November 17, 2008.

• Jurying will be based on digital image submissions.
• Entries may be submitted online or by mail (download mail-in entry form).
• A maximum of three pieces may be entered—up to three images for each piece entered may be submitted.
• The curators reserve the right to decline any accepted artwork upon delivery if condition or quality are other than represented in the electronic entry.

EXHIBITION DISPLAY

Work will be displayed on pedestals, shelves or walls. No enclosed cases are available, but the Gallery is well staffed. You may indicate if you do not want your work handled. All work must be ready to display. Book stands will be available if requested. Wall pieces must be framed and ready to hang.
