3/1/14: UCDA Design Education Summit
3/14/14 at midnight: Book Power Redux
Exhibition on view at 23 Sandy Gallery: May 30 - July 26, 2014; then traveling to Collins Memorial Library, University of Puget Sound: Mid-August to October 15, 2014
23 Sandy Gallery and the University of Puget Sound invite artists to participate in Book Power Redux, a juried exhibition of book art focusing on social and political issues.
THEME – Book Power Redux is seeking works addressing social and political issues. Artist books can be a powerful vehicle for social change and activism. For this show we have a strong interest in works that shine a light on some of the most vital issues of our day: race, diversity, equality, justice, bullying, poverty, civil rights, war and more.
Book artists have a unique opportunity given our accessible, multi-dimensional, multi-media format to go beyond just making things to making things happen. The current social and political issues listed above are but a few topics concerned artists can use to raise consciousness, call for justice or provoke action. Let's use our creative powers to solve the problems of the world.
MEDIA – This exhibit is open to book and paper arts related works. Artist books, sculptural books, book objects, altered books, zines, broadsides and print on demand artist books are all encouraged.
CONFERENCE CONFLUENCE – Book Power Redux will travel to Collins Memorial Library at the University of Puget Sound, and will be on display during a national conference focused on Race and Pedagogy. Details on the conference can be found on the conference web site here.
AWARDS – Three artists will receive Best of Show Awards, winners are selected upon installation of the show. In addition, we will also award the Library Purchase Prize. The winning work or works will be purchased by the gallery and donated to the artist books collection at the University of Puget Sound.
JURYING – This exhibit will be juried by Jane Carlin, MalPina Chan and Laura Russell.
Jane Carlin is currently the Library Director at the Collins Memorial Library at the University of Puget Sound. Prior to joining Puget Sound, Jane was the senior librarian for the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning Library and the University of Cincinnati as well as held posts at Oxford Brooks University in England, University of Texas at Arlington, and the Herron School of Art. Jane has long been an advocate of the book. Her graduate thesis, A History of Art Book Publishing in Great Britain, served as the foundation for many programs and classes she has taught on the art and history of the books. In 2008, Jane brought the book arts to the Collins Library and has worked with community members to form Puget Sound Book Artists, an organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the book arts. Jane is the curator of numerous exhibits at Collins and currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the organization. She is also an active member of the Book Club of Washington and is Chair-Elect of the Orbis Cascade Alliance, a network of 37 libraries serving Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
MalPina Chan was born in California and received her BFA from Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. Her portfolio includes works on paper, glass, mixed-media, and artist books and can be found in collections and exhibitions across the country. She curated both The Book as Art: Beyond Words and The Book as Art: Hand2Hand at Seattle’s Columbia City Gallery. MalPina’s work is included in 1,000 Artists' Books: Exploring the Book as Art and 500 Handmade Books Volume 2. Her Knock on Wood book was included in SUPERSTITION XIII at San Francisco Center for the Book. MalPina’s projects also include independent curatorial work, teaching workshops and lecturing. She is a board member of the Puget Sound Book Artist organization and has curated two of the members’ annual exhibits. She lives and works in Olympia, Washington.
Laura Russell is the owner and director of 23 Sandy Gallery and is also a photographer and book artist. She creates hand-bound, limited-edition artist books that incorporate photographs of our urban landscape and tell a story about our culture and our communities. She has participated in national and international book arts and fine art exhibitions and her books are collected by individual collectors and major collections at museums, libraries, universities and corporations.

HUNGER at crafthaus.com: January 15 - February 15, 2014
With diet as a way of life for many in our culture, we’ve been taught that one should Eat to Live. We've forgotten that from the 18th through the early 20th century, being fat was a sign of health, prosperity, and an attraction at a time when food was scarce and many went hungry. HUNGER, in all its metaphorical forms, is part of our personal and public conversation. Many of us struggle with HUNGER, and yearn for the pleasure of food, love, possessions, control, sex or POWER.

On Cherokee Street a collective spirit prevails – of inclusiveness, collaboration, diversity and enthusiasm – fueled by a by-the-bootstraps DIY ethos. Here, you can find authentic Hispanic restaurants as well as multi-colored screen-prints, meticulous wood-cuts, custom-printed t-shirts, vegan ice-cream, old-world Lickhalter breads, freshly roasted coffee, obscure LPs and rare antiques."

One Show Design, due January 31
Once upon a time, you dreamt of finding that ONE amazing idea. Now each and every night, as the clock ticks away, your mind still wanders to a beautiful, magical place. Lost in your own little world where time and space give way to creative euphoria. Eight o’clock, ten-thirty, eleven-thirty- ONE. Here, deadlines giggle and surrender to the tickling of puppy-dog kisses. Fuzzy bunnies suggest that ONE perfect typeface. And hey, there are happy clouds! They’re smiling and giving you high-fives and singing, “You are number ONE!” Then suddenly, you find what you’ve been searching for. That’s it. That’s the ONE. “Oh, thank you, grizzly bear! It’s beautiful!” And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, you spring to your feet and enter something ONEDERFUL.

THE THIRD GLOBAL INTERACTION IN DESIGN CONFERENCE, abstracts due Feb 15
THE THIRD GLOBAL INTERACTION IN DESIGN CONFERENCE
Date: November 7, 2012 | Theme: Consumed
*Call for proposals*
You are invited to present at the 3rd Global Interaction in Design Conference to be held virtually on November 7, 2012. GLIDE is a biennial, virtual conference that disseminates cutting-edge research on topics related to interaction between designers and global communities. The purpose of a virtual-only format is to bridge cultural and geographic divides in an eco-friendly way.
GLIDE12 will promote research and critical thinking on international issues surrounding food, nutrition, and health. Potential topics include but are not limited to:
- Challenges or rewards of food production and consumption
- Hunger and the human ability to survive in diverse agricultural environments
- The culture of food systems globally
- The role of culture, technology, sustainability infrastructures, and eco-systems in addressing the issue of hunger and nutrition and the pursuit of good health.
- Best practices for the development of food systems through the use of language and data collection
- Agribusiness as a resource for information that best serves local farmers and community based greenhouse projects
- Collaborative teams and methods for the creation of more effective food systems
- The role of social media to manage food systems, good nutrition, and health
- The role of public policy makers to increase better systems with food displacement
- The role of art and design in effecting good health or engendering healthy habits
Today, food is no longer viewed simply for nourishment, pleasure or an overly mass-produced product. Now, due to global industrialization, the way humans interact with food systems and production has reached a critical mass, requiring citizens of the world to consider the introduction of new methods, technological systems and research that will enable cultures to remain healthy and viable in the unforeseeable future.
GLIDE’12 aims to address a range of critically important ideas relating to the globalization of food production and consumption as well as focusing on specific themes such as sustainability and systems design addressed by curated presentations from leading researchers, design practitioners, scientists, public policy makers, educators and doctoral students. GLIDE12 presenters will deliver groundbreaking topics that will inspire, motivate and expand your knowledge of global food consumption and production for nutrition and good health.
You may submit full paper proposals for synchronous presentation or poster paper proposals for asynchronous presentation on topics related to the conference theme.

2nd EIBAB EUROPEAN INTERNATIONAL BOOK ART BIENNALE, June 15, 2012
2nd EIBAB EUROPEAN INTERNATIONAL BOOK ART BIENNALE
The EIBAB Biennale subject 2012:
TRANS (FORMS)
"Once upon a time there was a world where writing was unknown. A world different to ours, but nevertheless still human. Everything changed once writing was invented. But, maybe the writing was only revealed to humans and not invented by them. It is sure that, for thousands of years, writing was the secret recipe of spiritual texts, guarded by royalty or the keepers of sacred knowledge. Beyond its content, writing has an exterior, a visual feature. Transposing or “packaging” the idea into text implies an infinite variety of shapes and materials. In this way the writing and the book become an art object. A book is more than the content it holds; its physical structure, and visual impact are also part of it. In some oriental traditions, calligraphy was considered a spiritual pathway.
But what is happening writing today? With the book? Is there still any connection with the primary sense? Does writing have any connection with the human essence nowadays?”

Book live!, abstracts due 1/15
Book live!
International symposium and related live events at London South Bank
University
8th - 9th June 2012
a collaboration between the Centre for Media and Cultural Research (CMCR) at LSBU and bookRoom Research Cluster at UCA Farnham.
The event will bring together theorists, researchers and practitioners to stimulate a dialogue across disciplines on the ability of the book to keep up with digital culture and the emergence of new modes of writing, of photographing, of reading, or archiving and of disseminating on the page work. The purpose of this conference is to examine the current transforming and expanding of the book rather than its virtual disintegration.
The conference will include international guest speakers from the broader world of publishing, photography and experimental writing as well as short presentations of book works and a series of live experimental and durational readings. The two keynote speakers are Joan Fontcuberta (photographer, artist and all-round critic of contemporary culture from Barcelona) and Sharon Helgason Gallagher (founder and director of D.A.P and ARTBOOK in New York). There will be a performance of the full twelve hours of John Cage's Empty Words (first published in 1979 by Wesleyan University Press) by Sylvia Alexandra Schimag (Germany), coinciding with the release of the complete recording by Editions Wandelweiser.
CALL FOR PAPER AND PRESENTATION max 25 minutes
Call for papers, presentations, panels and readings dealing with (but not limited to) the following themes and research questions;
- How has digital technology allowed the book to expand its boundaries, both in space and time?
- Innovative convergence of traditional craft skills and advanced technologies in the making, reading, archiving or disseminating of books.
- Interdisciplinary experiments that addresses the cultural translations between traditional skills and advanced technologies.
- Explorations that reconsider the contemporary or future role of the book socially, culturally, politically.
- Innovative or disastrous explorations and transgressions of ebook readers.
- What do we gain and lose with on screen Œreading¹?
- How is conventional publishing adapting to fast changing digital economy?
- What has become of collecting in our digital culture?
- What is knowledge now that computers can provide and keep everything?
- High culture versus digital culture
Beyond the conference we will be bringing together papers and other contributions as a publication in its own right; an interesting survey of current thinking and innovative practice informed by both the themes and the findings of the conference. Edited and designed by bookRoom press, and published by RGAP.
Deadline for abstracts: 15th january 2011 - Decision sent before 15th february
Please send abstracts to Emmanuelle Waeckerle (ewaeckerle@ucreative.ac.uk)
Submissions from doctoral students and early-career postdoctoral researchers
are encouraged, as well as submissions from non-academic publishers, collectors, artists, writers and thinkers.

Uncommon Threads, 8/18
CALL FOR ENTRIES
Uncommon Threads: The Handicrafts in Book Arts
Exhibition dates: September 23 - October 29, 2011
Location: 23 Sandy Gallery, Portland, Oregon
Deadline for Entries: August 18, 2011
THEME - One of the best aspects of working in the field of book and paper
arts is the chance to work with such varied artistic materials and
techniques—even traditional handicraft techniques. Think of knitting,
embroidery, sewing, beading, felting, needlework, stitching, quilting and
any other myriad possibilities. Combine these techniques or materials with a
strong concept, meaningful content, a story to tell or a compelling
narrative and we have a new era in the book and paper arts.
Uncommon Threads seeks artist books and other forms of book and paper art
that utilize handicraft techniques, materials or subjects as a way to round
out, illustrate or compliment a central concept. Remember, it’s not just
about the materials or techniques. Let’s dispel the myth that the
handicrafts can’t have any part in meaningful art.
MEDIA - This exhibit is open to hand crafted book and paper arts related
works created as either edition or one-of-a-kind. Artist books, sculptural
books, book objects, altered books, zines, broadsides and sculptural pieces
are all encouraged. Any medium, any style, any size.
AWARDS - Three artists will receive "Best of Show Awards" which will include
a certificate and special marketing blitz focusing on their work. One artist
will receive a "Library Choice Award" which will be awarded based on ballots
cast by our library and museum customers and will also receive a certificate
and marketing blitz.
DEADLINE – Submissions are due no later than August 13, 2011
INFO – A complete call for entries for Uncommon Threads can be found here:

In And Out Of The Box, 6/27
Concept: The ebb and flow of consumerism initiated the decline of shopping in person at big box/warehouse stores and the rise of the virtual/mail order shopping experience. As a result of this shift, there has naturally been a rise in the number of boxes being sent around the world from retailer to buyer. Additionally, the experience of packaging, sealing, opening, and unwrapping has exponentially grown. In And Out Of The Box invites imaginative makers to explore this unfolding cultural phenomenon. This show will address the nature of “boxing”: packing, sending, delivering, receiving, etc. All boxes and packaging material will be displayed in this exhibit, as we strive to make the process of the delivery a focus of the show.
